By the time the 1870 Ordnance Survey map was p u b l i s h e d ,Sand Banks had become "a sandpit This was the beginnings of the excavations you can now see as steep banks and pits.This long-established quarry,as well as being a piece of history in its own right,has produced some excellent archaeological finds,including 8,000 year old Mesolithic flint tools,a 5,000 year old Neolithic polished stone axe,Iron Age cremation burials and Romano-British pottery,
